CAD File Format
- CAD (Computer-Aided Design) files may contain 2D or 3D designs.
- They are generated by CAD software programs, which can be used to create models or architecture plans.
- 2D CAD files are often referred to as drawings, while 3D files are often called models, parts, or assemblies.
- Common CAD file extensions include .DWG, .DXF,.DGN, and .STL.
File Format
.DWG- DWG is a proprietary binary file format used for storing two- and three- dimensional design data and metadata.
- It is the native format for several CAD packages including DraftSight, AutoCAD, IntelliCAD, Caddie and Open Design Alliance compliant applications.
.DXF
- DXF stands for Drawing Exchange Format.
- Files that contain the .dxf file extension contain CAD vector image files.
- The DXF file format is similar to the DWG file format, but DXF files are ASCII based and are therefore more compatible with other computer applications.
- The DXF file format was developed as an exchange format for the CAD files that are created by computer aided drafting software applications.
.DGN
- DGN is a file extension for a Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawing file format used by Bentley Systems MicroStation.
- DGN files are generally used for architectural and engineering designs.
- DGN is short for “design.”
.STL
- STL (STereo Lithography) is a file format native to the stereo lithography CAD software created by 3D Systems.
- STL is also known as Standard Tessellation Language.
- This file format is supported by many other software packages; it is widely used for rapid prototyping and computer-aided manufacturing.
