Networking Devices

Modem

  • Modem is a device which used for modulation and demodulation of digital signal to analog signals and vice versa.
  • Modems are small box like devices used in dial up network connections.
  • Standard model modems handle data at 56000 bits per second.

Network Router

Router

  • A router is a type of device which acts as the central point among computers and other devices that are part of a network.
  • A router is equipped with holes called ports by which computers and other devices are connected to a router using network cables.
  • Now-a-days router comes in wireless modes using which computers can be connected.

Hub

  • A hub, in the context of networking, is a hardware device that relays communication data.
  • A hub sends data packets to all devices on a network, regardless of any MAC addresses contained in the data packet.

Switch

  • A switch is a device which is used to connect multiple number of computer in a network.
  • It stores the MAC address of the every computer and to which port it has been connected.
  • When it receives the data packet,it checks the mac address and forwards it to the destination.

Firewall

  • A firewall is a network security system, based hardware or software that controls incoming and outgoing network traffic based on a set of rules.
  • Acts as a barrier between a trusted network and other untrusted networks.
  • This means that the only traffic allowed onto the network defined in the firewall policy is; all other traffic is denied.
